The rejection room
Courage is built in rungs
Graded exposure, borrowed from clinical practice rather than bravado. You climb when the previous rung stops producing dread — never before, never on a dare.

Your ladder
Being seen
3 rungs
Nothing is asked of you but to be in the room.
Rung 1, not cleared yet.Pause in the doorway
One breath outside the door. Walk in slower than the nerves want.
Rung 2, not cleared yet.Eye contact with three strangers
Two beats longer. You look away first.
Rung 3, not cleared yet.Wear the thing you save for safe company
The colour, the hat, the shirt. Somewhere ordinary, all day.
Speaking first
3 rungs
Words leave your mouth. Nothing rides on them yet.
Rung 4, not cleared yet.A sentence to a stranger, daily
Weather, queue, anything. Words leaving your mouth is the whole win.
Rung 5, not cleared yet.Open on the room, not the person
The book, the broken machine, the queue you are both in.
Rung 6, not cleared yet.A genuine compliment, no follow-up
Then leave. Practise wanting nothing back.
Staying in it
5 rungs
The conversation has to survive a second beat.
Rung 7, not cleared yet.Ask the second question
About the same subject, before you say anything about yourself.
Rung 8, not cleared yet.Let three seconds pass
When a silence arrives, count three before you fill it.
Rung 9, not cleared yet.Two minutes with someone you find attractive
End it yourself, warmly, while it is still good.
Rung 10, not cleared yet.Say the less-charming true thing
One unpolished opinion, and no recovery joke after it.
Rung 11, not cleared yet.Do it badly on purpose
Fumble the opening deliberately. Find out what a fumble costs.
Asking, and being refused
6 rungs
An answer is on the line, and it can be no.
Rung 12, not cleared yet.Ask for contact details once a week
A no here is the point of the exercise, not its failure.
Rung 13, not cleared yet.Invite someone somewhere specific
A place and a time. Vagueness is avoidance in a nice coat.
Rung 14, not cleared yet.Go again within a day
After a bad one, approach someone inside twenty-four hours.
Rung 15, not cleared yet.Three noes this week
A quota of refusals, not of successes.
Rung 16, not cleared yet.Tell one person it happened
Out loud, in plain terms, without making it funny.
Rung 17, not cleared yet.Say the vulnerable true thing
To someone who could reasonably say no.
Log an interaction
Four steps. Situation, thought, pattern, reframe. You are asked again in two days — that second number is where progress actually shows.
What gets counted
Every reframe records how loud the thought was, out of five. Two days later you are asked again, and the second number is the one worth having — it is the only way to see the forecast being wrong rather than being told it is.
The chart and the falling percentage appear here once there are three of them.
